Stripping back years of paint
Period joinery often hides its detail under layers of old gloss. Where you want the timber to show, we sand back carefully and test a stain on a hidden part before the full job. Where it will stay painted, we sand enough to give a sound key, fill dents and seal bare pine with a Zinsser primer to keep knots from showing.
On a listed building, and Landbeach has 26, original doors and staircases deserve extra care. Ask South Cambridgeshire District Council if you plan to remove or change historic joinery rather than refinish it.
Woodwork staining and varnishing in Landbeach
A stained and varnished staircase can lift a whole hall. Valter and Denes did the staining on Mrs M Turner's staircase and doors in Fordham, and she found them exceptionally polite and very punctual. Our staircase sanding and varnishing page explains the process, and internal door painting covers doors.

How we approach woodwork staining & varnishing
We protect floors and stair carpets, clean the handled areas, then sand with Mirka dust-free sanders. Stain is tried on a hidden patch first and applied evenly with the grain, followed by clear coats rubbed down between applications. Painted woodwork gets Zinsser primer on bare wood, then Tikkurila satin or an eggshell. The full method, products and FAQs are on our woodwork staining & varnishing page.
