Painter & decorator in Chesterton
Chesterton lies on the north bank of the River Cam, roughly four miles from our base in Landbeach. As a painter & decorator working in Chesterton, most of what we're asked to price is indoor work: halls and stairs, bedrooms, kitchens, and the front room that hasn't been touched in years.
A good deal of the area is Victorian and Edwardian terraced and semi-detached housing, with later infill and some newer flats. The older houses share a few traits. Ceilings are tall, hallways are narrow, and the plaster is often a patchwork of original work and later repairs.
Narrow halls and tall stairwells
In a terraced house the stairwell is usually the hardest space to decorate. It has the tallest wall in the property, it takes the most knocks, and it can't be left half done because everyone has to use it. We set up platforms and steps so the decorator can reach the top of the wall safely, and leave a clear route up and down at the end of each day.
Halls are also where wallpaper really earns its place. We've hung William Morris paper through a hall, stairs and landing over three levels in central Cambridge, which you can see in the William Morris staircase project. Simon, our wallpaper specialist, does that kind of work, and our wallpaper hanging service runs from plain lining paper to designer and heritage papers.
Kitchens, bedrooms and windows
Kitchen units
Replacing a kitchen in a terrace is disruptive and costly. Repainting the doors and carcasses is a lighter option. We clean, key and prime the units, then finish them by brush and roller or with Graham's Graco Ultra cordless airless sprayer, depending on the doors. Our kitchen cabinet painting page goes into more detail.
Bedrooms with older walls
Stripping old paper in a period bedroom often reveals lath and plaster that needs attention. In one Cambridge bedroom we stripped, the affected walls were skimmed, sanded with our dustless sander and given a mist coat to show any marks before the Farrow & Ball topcoats. The interior decorating team can arrange the plastering as part of the same job.
Bay and sash windows
Painted-shut sashes and flaking sills are common in older terraces. Rather than leave them as the one shabby part of a freshly decorated room, we can ease, repair and repaint them through our sash window repairs.
Seeing our work before you book
We don't have a Chesterton project written up on the site, so we won't pretend otherwise. You can see examples from around Cambridge in our photo gallery, and read what customers have said on the reviews page.
Two Cambridge jobs are a good match for Chesterton's older houses. In a Farrow & Ball redecoration, deep ceiling cracks were filled and bare pine frames were primed with Zinsser before two coats of Elephant's Breath eggshell. In a bedroom strip and skim, we finished with Skimming Stone on the walls, a Cinder Rose feature wall and a window in Fired Earth Turkish Blue.
Parking, access and timing
Parking on terraced streets can be limited, and some streets have residents' permit schemes. When Graham visits he'll ask where the van can go and whether a visitor permit is needed, so that's sorted before the start date.
Where there's no side access, everything comes in through the front door. We lay dust sheets along the route and protect floors and banisters. Back garden work, like painting a fence or shed, is planned the same way. With neighbours close on either side, we keep the pavement clear of kit and keep noise reasonable.
How long a room takes depends mostly on the preparation and the drying time between coats. Graham will give you an idea of the timescale with the quotation, and we'll agree a start date that works for you.
Booking a free quote in Chesterton
Call 07854 408573 or message us on WhatsApp. Graham will arrange a time that suits you, look at the rooms, talk through colours and finishes, and send a detailed written quotation, usually by email. If you'd rather supply your own paint, that's fine; we'd just ask that it's a good-quality brand.
Once the job is booked, Belinda organises the schedule and keeps you informed, so you know who is coming and when.
