Your painter and decorator in Fulbourn
Fulbourn is one of the villages where we have work to show you. Graham Halpenny Decorators is based in Landbeach, roughly 8 miles away, and we've decorated in Fulbourn before, including a converted telephone exchange in the village. If you need a painter and decorator in Fulbourn, Graham will come out, look at the job in person and send you a written quote.
Fulbourn lies just east of Cambridge, beyond Cherry Hinton. It has kept a proper village centre, and its houses range from older cottages and period properties to post-war and newer homes, with the restored windmill on the edge of the village.
That mix means no two jobs here look quite alike. One week it might be a cottage bedroom with uneven walls, the next a hallway in a family house that needs tough, washable paint. Graham's visit is where we work out which approach each one needs.
The Old Telephone Exchange conversion
Our client turned the village's old telephone exchange into a contemporary home and asked us to complete the interior decorating. It's a small space that makes use of every inch, so we kept the walls white to keep it light and airy, and chose Dulux Night Jewels 2, a deep dark shade, for the interior trim.
The finishing touch was oiling the kitchen worktops and the beams with Osmo, which soaks into the timber and protects it while keeping the grain visible. Valter, one of our decorators, did the work. Photos are in the Old Telephone Exchange case study.
Roger and Sharon's review of the job: "Delighted with the first class service and decorating received from Graham and Belinda's team. No snags or concerns at all. You can't improve on perfection."
Ideas that carry over to other small homes
Conversions and compact cottages share a problem: limited floor space and, often, limited daylight. A few things worked well in the exchange and apply elsewhere.
- Light walls with a strong, dark trim make a small room look crisp rather than cramped.
- Exposed timber such as beams, worktops and stair treads can be oiled instead of painted, so it stays natural but protected.
- Testing a dark colour in more than one spot before committing shows how it behaves in morning and evening light.
Choosing finishes for village homes
Hallways and kitchens in busy family houses take more knocks than anywhere else. For those we often suggest a washable matt such as Little Greene Intelligent Matt Emulsion, which also touches up well once cured, so a scuff doesn't mean repainting a whole wall.
On woodwork, a satin finish like Tikkurila's is harder wearing than flat paint and less shiny than traditional gloss. Bare pine benefits from a Zinsser primer first, otherwise knots can bleed through pale colours over time. If you'd rather the timber stayed natural, oil or a clear varnish keeps the grain on show.
Decorating services for Fulbourn homes and businesses
For timber like the exchange's beams, our wood staining, oiling and varnishing work covers beams, worktops, staircases and doors. Mrs M Turner in Fordham was particularly pleased with the staining on her staircase and doors, done by Valter and Denes.
Most Fulbourn enquiries are for painting and decorating inside the house: walls, ceilings and woodwork, with colour advice if you want it. Simon, our wallpaper specialist, handles paper hanging and feature walls. Outside, we paint render, brick, windows, doors, soffits and fascias as part of our exterior decorating service.
We also decorate shops, offices and other workplaces, scheduled to keep disruption down; see commercial decorating.
Planning a job in Fulbourn
Call or WhatsApp Graham on 07854 408573. He'll arrange a visit at a time that suits you, talk through what you have in mind and send a detailed quotation, usually by email. We stick to it, and any extras are agreed with you first.
Graham will give you a realistic start date and an idea of how long the work should take once he's seen it. Belinda organises the project and keeps you informed along the way. If parking outside your house is limited, mention it at the visit so we can plan where the van goes. We tidy up every day, and you don't pay until you're happy with the finished work.
