Sawston's homes, by the numbers
The 2021 Census counted 3,057 households and about 7,270 residents in the parish. Semi-detached houses are the most common type by a distance, at 47% of homes, with terraces and detached houses each making up a little under a quarter. Flats are rare, at about 6.5%.
Council Tax records tell a clear story about age. Nearly two in three Sawston properties were built between 1945 and 1982, and the single busiest period was 1965 to 1972. That fits the large post-war estates to the north-west and south of the village. Homes from those years often come with Artex ceilings, original white uPVC replacements and fitted kitchens from a later refit.
The older village and its listed buildings
Fewer than 7% of homes predate 1919, but the old core is still important. Sawston has 45 listed buildings, including Sawston Hall, a Grade I Tudor manor house from the 16th century, the Grade I Parish Church of St Mary and the Grade II* Queen's Head Inn. The village also has its own conservation area.
Local chalk and clay contain a lot of flint, and it turns up in older buildings around the village. Period walls like these need breathable finishes and careful preparation. Our Sawston exterior painting page goes into more detail.
How we work in Sawston
Graham visits first, looks at the rooms or the outside of the house, and sends a detailed written quotation, usually by email. We stick to it, and anything extra is agreed with you before it is done. Belinda organises the job and keeps you up to date.
Our 12 decorators are all City & Guilds or NVQ qualified, and we are Dulux Select Decorators. As well as interior decorating, we hang wallpaper, skim ceilings with our own plasterers and paint kitchens. You do not pay until you are happy with the finished work.
