Painter & decorator Ely: up the A10 from Landbeach

Ely is about twelve miles north of our base in Landbeach, straight up the A10. It's further than most of the villages we cover, but we're happy to make the trip. If you need a painter & decorator in Ely, Graham still comes out in person to see the job before he prices it.

Ely is a small cathedral city with a lot of history in its buildings. Around the cathedral and the older streets running down towards the River Great Ouse there are Georgian and Victorian houses, many of them listed or within the conservation area. Newer estates have grown up around the edge of the city.

A bedroom in Ely, in the customer's words

Graham Burrell, who lives in Ely, had us decorate a bedroom. Afterwards he wrote: "From the very start Graham was on time, did what he said he would do, and the job was finished in good time. They made an excellent job of it and I would have no problem recommending them or having them back."

A single bedroom gets the same treatment as a large project. The visit, the written quotation and the walk-round at the end are no different. Graham talks through colours and finishes, the team protects the furniture and carpets, and the room is left tidy at the end of every day.

Gold-oiled floors in nearby Haddenham

A few miles from Ely, in Haddenham, we decorated part of a house in Farrow & Ball and then brought in Chris, our wooden floor specialist, for the floors.

Chris sanded the dining and living room floors back with belt and edging sanders, repaired small defects, and filled gaps with a mix of sawdust and Induro Morrells Mix & Fill. After a final pass with a Mirka dust-free sander, he finished them in Osmo Polyx tint oil in Gold, which contains flecks of 24-carat gold. The Haddenham floor restoration shows it from start to finish, and our floor sanding service page explains how it works.

Decorating period and listed homes in Ely

Older buildings need materials that suit them. Solid walls and lime plaster need to breathe, so we'll point you towards breathable paints such as Little Greene Intelligent Matt rather than something that traps moisture. Cracks are filled properly rather than painted over, and bare timber is primed before any eggshell goes on.

If your home is listed or in the conservation area, some changes may need consent, particularly to the outside. It's worth checking with East Cambridgeshire District Council before settling on new exterior colours, and Graham will raise it at the visit.

Original sash windows are common in the older houses, and replacing them in a listed building is rarely simple, so sash window restoration is often the sensible route. Heritage papers suit these interiors too. We've hung William Morris paper through three floors of a central Cambridge house, and our paper hanging covers designer and heritage papers as well as lining paper.

Newer houses around the city

Not every Ely home is old. On the newer estates the work tends to be simpler: filling settlement cracks, replacing tired builder's paint, and freshening woodwork that has been knocked about by family life. Outside, our house painting service covers render, brick, soffits and fascias.

Kitchens are another common request. Painting the existing units is a lot less disruptive than replacing them, and we can repaint kitchen cupboards in a colour that suits the rest of the room. Garden fences, gates and sheds can be added to the same quotation.

Planning a job twelve miles from our base

Distance doesn't change how we work. Graham visits at a time that suits you, then sends a written quotation, usually by email. We plan materials before the start date so the team arrives with what the job needs. Belinda keeps you informed about who is coming and when, which matters more when the team is travelling a little further.

Streets in the older part of the city can be narrow, with limited parking, so let us know what's possible outside your house. If there's a better place to unload, Graham will note it at the visit.

Graham Halpenny Decorators is a professional, friendly and exceptional company. Belinda and Graham went above and beyond to explain all the possible options to us and find a suitable time to start the job. They are excellent decorators, very patient, skilled, tidy and courteous. The quality of the work is outstanding and the final result is so impressive that after calling them for the first time to redecorate some rooms in my house, I called them again shortly after to redecorate the remaining ones. I would recommend them unreservedly.

Graham and his team did a fantastic job plastering pretty much our entire house. They worked flat out to complete a challenging job in a short amount of time and were always more than happy to give advice. A brilliant job and I would thoroughly recommend them.
