Clunch cottages, 1990s estates and everything between
Clunch, a soft chalk limestone, was dug in Burwell from 1252 until 1952 and went into many of the village's houses. Historic England lists 59 buildings in the parish, including the Grade I Church of St Mary and Stevens' Mill, a Grade II* windmill probably built about 1820 that is now part of the village museum. The Burwell High Town and Burwell North Street conservation areas cover parts of the village.
Most homes are much younger. Council Tax records count about 2,910 properties, and the single biggest building period is 1993 to 1999, with around 480 homes. Only about one in eight predates 1919, so a typical Burwell job is a house built between the 1960s and the 1990s.
Who lives in Burwell's homes
Burwell had 6,405 residents in 2,766 households at the 2021 Census. Half of all homes are detached and just over a quarter are semis, while flats account for under 7%. About three households in four own their home, 42% of them outright, and around 11% each rent privately or from a social landlord. Some 34% of homes have at least four bedrooms.
That means larger houses with plenty of wall, ceiling and woodwork. Our pages on wallpapering in Burwell and exterior woodwork and house painting in Burwell explain how we'd approach two jobs that suit the village's housing well.
