A village built in one long push
Planning for Bar Hill began in the late 1950s on land bought from Chivers Ltd in 1959, and the plan was approved in 1964. The village was laid out as closes inside an outer ring road, so most streets are quiet groups of houses of similar age.
The numbers back that up. Of roughly 2,310 properties on the Council Tax list, about 1,080 date from 1965 to 1982 and another 820 from 1983 to 1992. Fewer than one in twenty predate 1919, and Historic England records no listed buildings or conservation areas inside the parish boundary.
What that means for decorating in Bar Hill
Houses of this age rarely need the heavy plaster repairs of a Victorian terrace, but they have their own patterns. Textured Artex ceilings were widely used in the 1970s and 1980s, and many kitchens, doors and window frames from those years still work while looking their age.
The 2021 Census counted 1,739 households, and three-quarters own their home, about 42% outright. Detached and semi-detached houses make up just over two-thirds of the village, with flats at only 4%, so most of our work here is whole houses, gardens and exteriors. Our pages on skimming Artex ceilings in Bar Hill and respraying uPVC frames here go into the detail.
