Gardens laid out around closes
Bar Hill was laid out as closes inside an outer ring road, which brings plenty of shared boundaries. With 34% of homes detached and 34% semi-detached, many houses have side access as well as fences front and back, and side gates take a lot of handling.
Before painting a shared fence, check which side is yours. We can paint the neighbour's face only with their agreement.
Preparation and product for garden timber
Algae, dirt and loose fibres are cleaned off first, with an anti-fungal wash where the timber can take it and a gentler approach on rough-sawn panels. Flaking paint on sheds and gates is scraped and sanded. Then Graham suggests a solid-colour garden paint or a stain that lets the grain show.
Gates get every face painted, including the top and bottom edges, because bare end grain is where rot starts. If a post or board has gone, our carpenter can replace it first. The shed and fence page covers products in more detail.

How we approach shed, fence & gate painting
We'd book a Bar Hill garden for a dry spell, clean the timber and let it dry fully, then protect paving and planting. Sheds get cladding, trims and door edges done, with extra attention on the bottom boards. Fences are brushed, or sprayed with our Graco only where overspray can be properly controlled. The full method, products and FAQs are on our shed, fence & gate painting page.
