Detached plots and long fence runs
Around 1,300 households here live in a detached house, according to the 2021 Census. Detached plots usually mean fencing on three sides, and sometimes a summerhouse as well as a shed. On a long run of panels, the posts and gravel boards at the base are the first to fail, so they get a proper coat rather than a quick pass.
Semis account for another 40% of homes, often with a shared boundary. We can only paint fences that are yours, or the neighbour's side with their agreement, so it's worth checking ownership before Graham visits.
Cleaning first, then paint or stain
Green algae and dirt stop any finish from soaking in. Where the timber can take it, we use an anti-fungal wash, and on soft rough-sawn panels a gentler approach. Then it's a choice between an opaque garden paint that hides the grain and a stain that lets it show.
John Dunn in Cambridge told us he and his wife were delighted with how Denes finished their shed. There are more comments like his on our reviews page.

How we approach shed, fence & gate painting
We'd cut plants back from the fence line, protect paving and clean off algae, then let the wood dry fully. Flaking paint on sheds and gates is scraped and sanded, end grain on gate tops and bottoms sealed, and two coats applied by brush. Our Graco sprayer comes out only where overspray onto plants and cars can be controlled. The full method, products and FAQs are on our shed, fence & gate painting page.
