Painter and decorator for Swavesey's old and new homes
Swavesey's housing has a wider spread of ages than most villages around Cambridge. Council Tax records put about 14% of its homes before 1919, a much larger older core than places that grew mainly in the 1980s. At the other end, roughly 140 homes were added between 2020 and 2022. In between sits a large block from 1965 to 1999, which makes up well over half of the stock.
That range shapes the work. A cottage near the old centre may need lining paper over soft plaster and careful priming on old joinery, while a house finished in 2021 mostly needs its builder's emulsion replaced with something that wipes clean. Our interior decorating page for the village goes into the detail.
Listed buildings and the conservation area
Historic England lists The Old Manor House and the Parish Church of St Andrew at Grade I, and Ryder's Farmhouse at Grade II*. Another 25 buildings are Grade II, and the village has its own conservation area. If you live in a listed home or inside the conservation area, it is worth checking with South Cambridgeshire District Council before changing outside colours or replacing windows.
We have decorated listed property before, including a studio flat in central Cambridge where years of nicotine staining had to be blocked before any colour went on.
How a Swavesey job runs
Graham visits first, at a time that suits you, and looks at the rooms or the outside of the house. You then get a detailed written quotation, usually by email, and we stick to it. Belinda organises the dates and keeps you informed, and the team tidies at the end of each day.
Every one of the 12 decorators who might arrive at your Swavesey door holds a City & Guilds or NVQ qualification, and the firm is on Dulux's Select Decorator scheme. Most Swavesey households own their home, about 72% in the 2021 Census, so a lot of what we expect here is longer-term work: whole-house redecoration, wallpaper hanging and exterior repainting. Payment comes once you are happy with the finished work.
