Homes in Willingham and what they ask of a decorator
The 2021 Census counted 1,844 households in Willingham, and almost half of them live in detached houses (48.9%). Another quarter are semi-detached. Flats make up only about 6% of the village, so most of our enquiries here involve whole houses with gardens, outside walls and a fair amount of woodwork.
The age of the housing is mixed. Council Tax records date roughly 15% of properties to before 1919, while close to a third were built from 2000 onwards, and about 330 of those since 2009. An old cottage and a recent family home need quite different preparation, and Graham plans each job around the house in front of him.
Listed buildings and the Willingham conservation area
Willingham has a designated conservation area and 32 listed buildings on the Historic England list, among them the Grade I Church of St Mary and All the Saints and Cattell's Mill, listed Grade II*. If your house is listed or inside the conservation area, changes to the outside, such as a new colour on windows or a painted front, may need checking with South Cambridgeshire District Council first.
On older walls we use paints that let moisture escape, and we have decorated listed buildings before, including a studio flat in central Cambridge.
How a Willingham job runs
Once the quotation is agreed, Belinda books the dates and keeps you informed. We tidy at the end of each day, walk round the finished work with you, and you don't pay until you're happy with it.
Most work here is interior decorating, painting the outside of the house and wallpaper hanging, but we also paint sheds and fences, sand floors through our specialist Chris, and skim ceilings with our plasterers. In neighbouring Histon and Impington we decorated two Victorian bedrooms on their original sand and stone plaster.
