A painter and decorator for Cottenham's long High Street
Cottenham is one of the larger villages around Cambridge and one of the historical Fen Edge villages between the city and Ely. Most of its houses line a High Street just over a mile long, which has given it two distinct ends, Church End and Green End. The 2021 Census counted 6,331 residents in 2,725 households.
Fires shaped what survives. Over a hundred houses burned in 1676 and another 40 to 50 cottages in the Great Fire of 1850, so very few homes from before 1676 are left. Council Tax records put about 15% of today's properties before 1919, while more than a quarter were built from 2000 onwards, roughly 470 of them between 2019 and 2025.
Listed buildings and the Cottenham conservation area
Historic England lists 66 buildings in the parish. The Church of All Saints is Grade I and the rest are Grade II, including 56 Denmark Road and 191 and 193 High Street. There is also a Cottenham conservation area.
For a listed property, or a house within the conservation area, check with South Cambridgeshire District Council before changing outside colours or original features. We will ask about it when we visit, and on older walls we favour breathable paints that let moisture escape.
What Cottenham homeowners ask us for
Three in four households live in a detached or semi-detached house, and 73% own their home. That mix brings plenty of interior decorating, outside painting and wallpapering, along with kitchen units, floors through our specialist Chris, and plastering by Lewis and the master plasterer we work with.
We have been decorating since 1999, all 12 of our decorators hold City & Guilds or NVQ qualifications, and the firm is part of the Dulux Select Decorators scheme. Belinda is your contact from booking to the final walk-round, and you don't pay until you're happy with the finished work.
