A market town that grew around its abbey
Through the Middle Ages Ramsey was a small market town serving the abbey. Its gatehouse survives and is listed at Grade I, as are Bodsey House and Ramsey Abbey School. In all the parish has 60 listed buildings, seven of them at Grade I or II*, and Historic England records a Ramsey conservation area.
The wide main street, Great Whyte, was once a navigable canal. By 1854 it had been culverted in a brick tunnel, which is why the road is so broad today. If your home is listed or in the conservation area, Huntingdonshire District Council is the authority to ask before changing anything outside.
Ramsey's housing, old and new
The 2021 Census counted 3,817 households and around 8,600 residents. Detached houses are the most common type at 40%, followed by semis at 34%. Flats make up nearly 14%, and about 18% of households rent privately.
Council Tax records show a town built in layers. About one home in eight predates 1919, while at least a quarter date from 2000 or later, with building still going on in recent years. Older homes often need careful prep and breathable paints; newer ones usually need a colour change and tidy woodwork. Our Ramsey interior decorating page explains how we approach both.
Getting a quote in Ramsey
Graham visits before quoting, looks at the job with you and sends a written quotation, usually by email. We stick to it, and any extra is agreed before it is done. Because Ramsey is a longer drive for us, larger jobs such as a whole house, an exterior or wallpaper hanging across several rooms tend to suit best.
Our 12 decorators are City & Guilds or NVQ qualified, we are Dulux Select Decorators and we carry £5 million public liability insurance. Payment comes only once you are happy with the finished work, after Graham has walked round it with you.
