Artex ceilings in Fulbourn's post-war homes
Council Tax records show 400 homes in the parish built between 1955 and 1964, and close to 37% of the stock dates from 1945 to 1982. Many of these still have a textured ceiling somewhere, often in the living room or hallway.
Lewis, our plasterer, skims over the texture to leave a smooth surface ready for paint. We clear or sheet the room, take down light fittings and prepare the surface so the new plaster bonds. See the Artex skimming case study for a finished example.
Older walls and cracked ceilings
About 9% of homes here predate 1919, and some older cottages are timber-framed. Old plaster in houses like these can be soft or patched, and stripping wallpaper sometimes shows it is in worse condition than expected. We will show you, explain the options and agree the cost first.
Hairline cracks can be filled by a decorator. Deeper or recurring cracks may point to movement or a leak, and we will tell you if we think so.

How we approach plastering
Once Lewis or our master plasterer has finished, the plaster dries out fully. We sand off nibs with Mirka dust-free sanders, apply a mist coat to seal it and show up any dips, fill and spot-sand, then put on two full coats. Water-stained ceilings get a Zinsser stain block first. The full method, products and FAQs are on our plastering page.
