Sheds and summerhouses
Garden buildings fail at the bottom: the lowest boards, the door threshold and the corners where splash-back keeps the wood wet. We clean down the whole building, scrape and sand flaking paint, and flag soft wood for repair before quoting the paint. Window frames and trims are cut in by hand. Our shed and summerhouse painting page has more.
After a shed was painted for John Dunn in Cambridge, he asked us to pass his thanks to Denes: “We are both delighted with the way the shed has come out.”
Fences, gates and railings
Fence stain is usually easier to keep up than paint, because a fresh coat goes on without much preparation. Gates need their end grain sealed and hinges masked. Metal gates and railings are wire-brushed back to firm paint before priming and painting, as our metal railings and gates page describes.
With 17% of Fordham households in social housing and 14% renting privately, check your tenancy before painting a fence. Boundary fences may also belong to a neighbour.

How we approach shed, fence & gate painting
We'd book a dry week between late spring and early autumn, clean the timber with an anti-fungal wash where it suits, and give it time to dry. Plants are tied back and covered, and patios sheeted. On sheds we do every face and edge. On fences we finish both sides where you have access, and the posts get extra attention. The full method, products and FAQs are on our shed, fence & gate painting page.
