What weather does to garden timber
Garden timber goes silver-grey in the sun and green on the shady side. Fence posts and gravel boards fail first, and gates split where bare end grain soaks up water. A new coat only lasts if it goes onto clean, dry, sound wood.
We clean off algae and dirt, using an anti-fungal wash where it suits the timber and a gentler method on rough-sawn panels. Flaking paint on sheds and gates is scraped and sanded, and anything rotten is flagged before we start.
Paint, stain or both for Soham gardens
A solid garden paint hides the grain and suits a shed or summerhouse you want to make a feature of. A stain lets the grain show and is often easier to recoat on fences. Graham will recommend a product at the visit, and we can paint test patches for you to live with for a few days.
Fences on a boundary may be shared, so check which are yours. If a post has gone, our carpenter or master builder can replace it first. The main garden timber page has more on products.

How we approach shed, fence & gate painting
We'd book a dry spell, clean and dry the timber, then protect paving, plants and anything nearby. Sheds get every board, trim and door edge, with extra on the bottom boards. Gate hinges and latches are masked and loose rust removed. On a long fence we may spray, but only where overspray is fully controlled. The full method, products and FAQs are on our shed, fence & gate painting page.
