Windows in listed and conservation-area homes
Listed buildings in the town include one at Grade I and four at Grade II*. If your home is listed or in the Soham conservation area, check with East Cambridgeshire District Council before changing window colours. Outside, most people keep to white or a soft off-white, while inside there's more freedom.
Our work is decorative: preparation, repair-filling and painting with the right primers. Rotten timber, broken cords or a sash that needs replacing goes to our carpenter, planned as part of the same job.
Preparing and painting Soham sashes
Loose paint is scraped back and sanded with Mirka dust-free sanders, which matters on old windows where lower layers may contain lead. Open joints are filled, bare timber primed, and sills and bottom rails given the most care because they hold water. A bare-pine Farrow & Ball job in Cambridge shows our primer and eggshell sequence.
We work the sashes up and down so each face is painted without gluing them shut, and run a neat line onto the glass to seal the putty.

How we approach sash window restoration
Graham assesses each window and the quotation lists them individually, so you can start with the weather-facing side. We scrape, sand, fill and prime, then apply eggshell or satin. Exterior faces wait for a dry, settled spell. Sashes are eased before we leave each day so the house can be locked up. The full method, products and FAQs are on our sash window restoration page.
