Listed sashes and the council
If your house is listed or in the Fen Ditton or Baits Bite Lock conservation area, South Cambridgeshire District Council should be asked before you alter window colours, glazing or original timber. Like-for-like repainting is the usual approach on these windows.
Layers of old paint on a sash can include lead, so we sand with Mirka extraction sanders and keep the dust contained.
Painting so the sashes still slide
Our work is decorative: scraping to a sound edge, filling joints, priming bare timber and finishing in eggshell or satin. Rotten timber, broken cords and replacement parts are handled by our carpenter first, all under one quotation.
Sashes stick when paint builds up on the sliding faces, so we keep those coats thin and move each sash as it dries. For timber casements elsewhere on the house, see exterior window painting.

How we approach sash window restoration
We list every Fen Ditton window at the visit with its condition, so you can see what each one needs. After any joinery repairs, loose paint is scraped and dust-free sanded, sills and rails filled, and bare wood primed with Zinsser. Undercoat and two top coats follow, the paint is carried just onto the glass, and each sash is eased before we go. The full method, products and FAQs are on our sash window restoration page.
