Smooth ceilings for post-war houses
Lewis, our plasterer, and a master plasterer we work with skim over textured coatings to leave a flat, modern ceiling. It is usually quicker and less disruptive than taking a ceiling down. We clear or cover the room and protect the floor first. The Artex ceilings we skimmed in Cambridge show the result.
Because our decorators follow on, the room can go from textured ceiling to finished paint under one quotation.
Lath and plaster in the older homes
About a fifth of the village predates 1919. In houses like these, stripping paper can reveal lath and plaster in poor shape. Sometimes it needs a skim; sometimes filling and lining paper are enough, and Graham decides at the visit. On listed buildings, check with West Suffolk Council before replacing historic plaster.

How we approach plastering
After skimming, the plaster dries fully before any decorating. We sand lightly with Mirka dust-free sanders, apply a mist coat of thinned emulsion to seal the surface and show up imperfections, fill and spot-sand, then apply two full coats. New coving can be hung before the final coats if you would like it. The full method, products and FAQs are on our plastering page.
