Paint is what protects the timber
Once paint cracks on a sash window, water gets into the joints and bottom rails and the decay speeds up. We scrape back, sand, fill open joints, prime bare wood and repaint so the sashes still slide freely. Sills and end grain get the most attention.
Where a window needs more than paint, such as new timber or replacement cords, our carpenter does the joinery before we decorate, so you still deal with one firm.

How we approach sash window restoration
Loose paint is scraped to a sound edge and sanded with Mirka dust-free sanders, keeping dust from old, possibly lead-based coats out of the room. Bare timber is primed, joints and sills filled and each coat lightly sanded. Sashes are worked up and down during painting so every face is covered without clogging the runners. The full method, products and FAQs are on our sash window restoration page.
