Heritage rules and window colours
The town has 36 listed buildings and two conservation areas, Hamlet Road and Queen Street. If your home is listed or inside either area, check with West Suffolk Council before changing window colours outside. Inside, coloured sashes can look very good, and we'll paint test patches so you can judge.
Our work is decorative: careful preparation, repair-filling and painting. Rotten timber, broken cords or a replacement sash are jobs for our carpenter, arranged as part of the same project.
Painting sashes that still slide
We scrape back loose paint and sand with Mirka dust-free sanders, important on old windows where some layers may contain lead. Joints are filled, bare timber primed, and sills and bottom rails given extra attention. The sashes are worked up and down so every face is painted without sticking.
Our sash window restoration page explains the process in full.

How we approach sash window restoration
Each window gets its own line in the quotation after Graham's inspection. We scrape and sand, fill open joints, prime end grain and bare wood, then apply eggshell or satin, sanding lightly between coats. A fine line of paint goes onto the glass to seal the putty. Outside faces are left for settled dry weather. The full method, products and FAQs are on our sash window restoration page.
