Whatever age your kitchen is
Only about one Hundon home in eight was built after 1983, so kitchens here vary a great deal in age and construction. Doors might be solid timber, painted MDF or something else entirely, and Graham checks the material at the visit. If a finish is unlikely to hold paint, he will tell you before you commit.
Built-in dressers, alcove cupboards and wardrobes can be painted in the same visit, which helps make the journey out to the village worthwhile.
A finish that copes with daily use
Cupboard doors are handled more than any other painted surface, so they need a proper woodwork paint. Satin is easy to wipe; eggshell gives a softer look that suits a cottage kitchen. Our cabinet painting page has more on sprayed and brushed finishes.

How we approach kitchen cabinet painting
Handles and hinges come off and doors are labelled. Every surface is degreased, especially near the cooker, then sanded with Mirka dust-free sanders and filled where chipped. A Zinsser primer suited to the surface goes on, followed by Tikkurila, Farrow & Ball or Dulux eggshell or satin, sprayed with the Graco Ultra or brushed. The full method, products and FAQs are on our kitchen cabinet painting page.
