Period floorboards in Saffron Walden
The 2021 Census counted 1,587 terraced homes in the town, and many older terraces have softwood boards running through the ground floor. Lifting a corner of carpet is the quickest way to find out what's there. Chris, our wooden floor specialist, checks the thickness and condition before anything is quoted.
Engineered boards in newer homes may take one sanding or none, and laminate can't be sanded at all. Chris will tell you honestly if sanding isn't right for your floor.
How Chris restores the boards
He sands the main floor with a belt sander, working from coarse to fine paper, and the edges with an edging sander. Gaps are filled with the floor's own sawdust mixed with Induro Morrells Mix & Fill, the surface is smoothed with a Mirka dust-free sander, and the boards are finished in thin coats of Osmo Polyx oil, clear or tinted. The Haddenham floor restoration shows a Gold tint with flecks of 24-carat gold.

How we approach floor sanding
In a Saffron Walden period house Chris secures loose boards, punches down proud nails and checks for old repairs. He sands with belt and edging machines, fills gaps with sawdust and Mix & Fill to match the timber, smooths with a Mirka sander, then applies Osmo Polyx in thin coats. Doorways are sealed off to limit dust. The full method, products and FAQs are on our floor sanding page.
