Skimming over textured ceilings in Mildenhall
A skim coat covers the texture with a new smooth surface, which is quicker and less disruptive than replacing the ceiling. We sheet the room, take down fittings and prepare the surface so the plaster bonds. Lewis, our plasterer, or our master plasterer does the skim, and our decorators take over once it has dried.
One Cambridge customer was tired of Artex and wanted a contemporary look; the Artex skimming case study shows how Lewis left it.
Plastering in Mildenhall's older properties
The town also has about 270 homes from before 1919. Paper on an old wall can be hiding blown patches or lath and plaster that has lost its grip. Sometimes a skim is needed. Other times, filling and lining paper are enough, and Graham will tell you which at the visit so you don't pay for more plastering than the room needs.
Water-stained ceilings are sealed with Zinsser before painting so the mark doesn't bleed through. In a rented Mildenhall home, a ceiling marked by an old leak is worth sealing properly at changeover, so the stain doesn't reappear while the next tenant is living there.

How we approach plastering
After sheeting floors and furniture, our plasterer skims the ceiling or repairs cracked areas. When the new surface is completely dry we de-nib it, seal it with watered-down emulsion that also shows any hollows, put those right and apply two full-strength coats. The full method, products and FAQs are on our plastering page.
