Sash window painting in Stotfold
Sash windows tend to fail from the bottom up. Water sits on the sill and bottom rail, gets into an open joint and softens the wood. We scrape flaking paint back to a firm edge, fill cracks and joints, prime bare timber, and give sills and end grain extra attention.
Sanding is done with Mirka dust-free sanders, partly because old paint layers can contain lead. Sashes are moved up and down during painting so every face is covered without building paint up in the runners.
On the glass side, a neat line of paint just onto each pane keeps rain off the putty. It's slow work on small panes, and it's one of the details that makes a sash repaint last.
Listed homes and repairs
Stotfold's listed buildings include School House and 41 The Green, both Grade II. If your windows are on a listed house, ask Central Bedfordshire Council before altering them or changing their colour.
Sticking sashes, broken cords and rotten sections need carpentry, which our carpenter handles before we decorate. Our sash window restoration page explains the split between his work and ours.

How we approach sash window restoration
Graham lists every window in the quotation with its own work, so the weather side can be done first if you'd like to spread the job. Inside faces are painted in eggshell or satin, while outside faces wait for a dry spell and use exterior-grade paint. Sashes are eased before we leave each evening. The full method, products and FAQs are on our sash window restoration page.
