Modern rooms, mortgaged owners and social tenants
The census puts mortgaged owners at 44.6% and outright owners at 17%. Around 25% of households rent from social landlords and another 11% privately. So we decorate for owners planning to stay, and for landlords who need a property ready for the next occupant.
For owners it's usually a room-by-room programme, or one big push before a sale. With 35% of homes having four or more bedrooms, a whole-house job can be sizeable, and our team of 12 lets us put several decorators on at once.
Interior decorating in Papworth houses from the 1980s to the 2010s
Council Tax records show 590 properties from 1983 to 1999 and 830 from 2000 onwards, out of about 1,760. Walls are mostly plasterboard with a skim finish, and the usual faults are settlement cracks along ceiling edges, popped screw heads and scuffs up the stairs.
Those are quick to put right with the right filler and a careful sand, and they make a big difference to how a fresh colour looks. For a washable, breathable finish in hallways and family rooms we often suggest Little Greene Intelligent Matt. Our interior decorating service page covers colour advice and woodwork.

How we approach interior decorating
In a Papworth house from the 1990s we'd rake out and fill ceiling-line cracks, deal with popped fixings, sand woodwork dust-free and seal any water marks with Zinsser. Tester pots go on several walls so you can see the colour in morning and evening light. Then two finish coats, woodwork last, and a walk-round with Graham at the end. The full method, products and FAQs are on our interior decorating page.
