Decorating family houses in Hardwick
Of the 1,083 households counted in 2021, more than three quarters own their home, and flats make up only about 3% of the village. So the typical Hardwick job is a house its owners plan to stay in, where the hallway has taken years of school bags or a teenager wants a darker bedroom.
Roughly one household in eight rents privately. For landlords, we can refresh a house between tenancies, stain-blocking marks and using a washable emulsion that touches up well when the next tenant leaves.
Walls and ceilings in 1970s homes
With close to 44% of the village built between 1965 and 1982, plenty of ceilings still carry Artex or a run of hairline cracks. Our plasterers can skim a textured ceiling smooth before we paint, and the walls get filled, sanded and lined where needed. Our page on plastering explains how that part works.
Newer homes from the last few years need less repair, though fresh plaster still wants a mist coat before any colour goes on.

How we approach interior decorating
In a typical Hardwick semi the ceilings come first, with cracks filled and old water marks sealed with Zinsser stain block. Walls are washed, filled and sanded with Mirka dust-free sanders, then given two coats of a washable matt such as Little Greene Intelligent Matt. Woodwork follows in satin or eggshell, and tester pots go on several walls beforehand so you can judge the light. The full method, products and FAQs are on our interior decorating page.
