Wallpaper hanging on Victorian Chatteris walls
Old plaster has usually been patched and painted many times, and a patterned paper shows every ridge. We strip back, wash off old paste, fill, then line, so the finish paper dries onto an even surface. If stripping uncovers loose plaster, our plasterers can skim it, with any extra cost agreed first.
With 111 listed buildings in the town, some homeowners will be living in one. Internal changes to a listed building can need consent, so speak to Fenland District Council before removing historic finishes.
Feature walls, murals and whole rooms
About 68% of Chatteris households own their home. A papered wall behind a bed or across a chimney breast is a common place to start, and whole rooms are hung one at a time so the house stays usable.
In March, John hung photo wallpaper for Mrs Lee, who told us it looked really stunning. Murals come as numbered panels that must meet exactly, so we lay them out and check them before any paste goes on. Simon, our wallpaper specialist, also handles heritage papers like the William Morris design in our Cambridge staircase project. See our main wallpaper hanging page too.

How we approach wallpapering
Old paper comes off, including painted-over layers, and the walls are washed and filled. Uneven Victorian plaster gets lining paper, sized where the manufacturer recommends it. Patterns are planned so joins fall where they're least visible, batch numbers are checked, and every length is hung from a plumb line instead of being lined up against the last. The full method, products and FAQs are on our wallpapering page.
