Sash window restoration on Chatteris period houses
Council Tax records list about 610 properties before 1900 and 150 from 1900 to 1918. On houses of that age, the windows facing the weather usually need far more work than those on a sheltered side, so Graham lists each window separately. You can start with the worst and leave others for another year.
Listed terraces at 35 to 39 and 38 to 48 New Road are among the town's Grade II buildings. If your home is listed or in the conservation area, speak to Fenland District Council before changing window colours or replacing timber.
Paint, filler and our carpenter
Our sash work is decorative: scraping back, dust-free sanding, filling open joints, priming bare timber and finishing in eggshell or satin. Old paint can contain lead, so we control dust carefully.
Rotten timber, broken cords and new sashes go to our carpenter, planned around the painting. Our sash window restoration page has more, and other Victorian joinery is covered under woodwork staining and varnishing.

How we approach sash window restoration
Loose paint is scraped to a sound edge and feathered with Mirka dust-free sanders. Cracks and open joints are filled, sills and bottom rails are sealed with extra care, and bare wood is primed with Zinsser. We move the sashes during painting so they don't stick, keep the runners clear and seal the putty with a neat line onto the glass. The full method, products and FAQs are on our sash window restoration page.
