Where sash windows survive in Littleport
Council Tax records list around 430 properties from before 1900 and 130 from 1900 to 1918. Older houses may fall within the Littleport conservation area, and the town has 9 listed buildings, including 5 High Street and 3 Station Road. Before changing an outside colour on a listed or conservation-area home, check with East Cambridgeshire District Council.
Our job is the decorative work: preparing, filling and painting. If a sash needs new timber, new cords or replacing, our carpenter does it before we paint.
Painting a sash properly
Graham checks every window at the visit, because the weather side usually needs more work. The quotation lists each window, so you can start with the worst and leave sheltered ones for later. When we paint, we work the sashes up and down, keep paint off sliding faces and seal the putty with a fine line onto the glass.
Bare pine frames in one Cambridge Farrow & Ball project were primed with Zinsser and finished in Elephant's Breath eggshell.

How we approach sash window restoration
Flaking paint is scraped back and sanded with Mirka dust-free sanders, keeping dust down where old layers may contain lead. Cracks and open joints are filled, end grain on sills primed thoroughly, and bare wood sealed before anything else. Finishes are eggshell or satin inside and exterior-grade paint outside in dry weather. The full method, products and FAQs are on our sash window restoration page.
