Painting 1980s and 1990s kitchen cabinets in Waterbeach
Council Tax records date around 430 Waterbeach properties to 1983 to 1999. A house from that period may still have its first kitchen or be on its second. Solid timber and painted MDF doors are good candidates for paint. Foil-wrapped and high-gloss doors are less dependable, and Graham will say so at the visit rather than after we've begun.
If the timber worktops look as tired as the doors, we can sand and oil them with Osmo in the same job, as we did at the Old Telephone Exchange in Fulbourn.
Newer kitchens that only need a colour change
Roughly 770 Waterbeach homes have been built since 2009, with 170 completed in 2018 alone. Kitchens in houses that young are rarely worn out. More often the owner wants a colour the developer didn't offer, or darker base units against pale walls.
On plain slab doors Graham may use our Graco Ultra cordless sprayer for a brush-free coat. On Shaker doors or a small run of units, a well-laid-off brush finish is often better. Our main kitchen cabinet painting page compares the two.

How we approach kitchen cabinet painting
Handles come off and doors are labelled so each goes back in its place. Every surface is degreased, especially around the hob and bin, then sanded with Mirka dust-free sanders and filled where chipped. A Zinsser primer chosen for the surface goes on before two coats of Tikkurila, Farrow & Ball or Dulux woodwork paint. The full method, products and FAQs are on our kitchen cabinet painting page.
